Stephen Montgomery, his family and friends organised a fantastic fundraiser in memory of his much-loved wife Catherine, marking her first anniversary.
Stephen and Catherine, who have three children, Emily (10), James (8) and Matthew (3), got the unbelievable news that Catherine had renal cancer in August last year. Catherine, a GP, was just 38 when she sadly passed away three months later in November 2012.
Stephen and 250 of his family, friends and well-wishers took part in the Bangor 10k run last September in her memory. After the run they held a function at Bangor Rugby Club attended by the runners and many more friends.
"We are touched and grateful that so many people came together and made this a very special event in memory of someone who meant so much to us. I'd like to thank everyone who helped in any way or who made a donation. It has been very humbling and I know that, like me, Catherine would have been overwhelmed," said Stephen.
"Catherine and our family have received huge support from Cancer Focus. I can't think of a better way to remember her than to help fund a service that will support other families in the future."
Stephen and the children handed over a cheque to Rosie Forsythe, Cancer Focus's Community Fundraiser. Rosie said: "We are so grateful to Stephen and all those who have supported him. It has been a fantastic example of a community pulling together for a wonderful cause.
"All the money raised will go towards the Cancer Focus Family Support Service, which helps local families like the Montgomerys when an adult has cancer. We know from people like Stephen that this service is very much needed and appreciated. Huge thanks to everyone for your generosity - your donations mean we will be able to help more people who need support at a very tough time in their lives, and especially at Christmas."
